Electrons and free electrons
1) Electrons
The atoms are not the smallest particles: they contain even smaller particles called electrons.
All materials contain atoms therefore they also all contain electrons.
These particles are all identical (even if they belong to different atoms) and their symbol is e-.
2) Free electrons
However metals contain electrons that are said to be "free".
These free electrons can move freely inside the metal by following chaotic trajectories. These free electrons move naturally in all directions.
